Yukie Toyama

Research Social Scientist

Yukie Toyama is a research social scientist in the Center for Technology in Learning at SRI International. She is interested in designing new types of assessments for so-called “21st century capacities” and studying teaching and learning processes that foster such capacities in formal, informal, and cross-cultural settings. Currently, she is involved in Domain-Specific Assessment: Bringing the Classroom into Community College Accountability project that seeks to develop an assessment that measures deep forms of knowledge in economics and biology. She is also involved in Microsoft’s international research effort on Innovative Teaching and Learning. Recently, she has led strategic learning consulting for a Japanese publishing company which was interested in using the evidence-centered design to develop a prototype assessment for problem finding/identification capabilities.

In the past, Yukie participated in a variety of evaluation and assessment projects, including the Evaluation of Evidence-based Practices in Online Learning: A Meta-analysis of Online-learning Studies; the Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Educational Technology Interventions; and the Validities of Standards-Based Science Inquiry Assessments. Through these projects, Yukie has developed expertise in a variety of research tasks, including literature reviews, instrument development, recruitment of teachers and students, classroom observations and interviews, qualitative and quantitative analyses, and report writing.

Yukie holds Master's degree in International and Comparative Education from Stanford University. Prior to her graduate study, she worked for the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (Tokyo, Japan), where she was in charge of an international science inquiry program for high school students from Ghana, Kenya and Japan. There, she found herself deeply interested in empowering students through collaborative active learning.
