Geneva Haertel

Senior Educational Researcher

Geneva Haertel, Ph.D., is a Senior Educational Researcher in the Center for Technology in Learning at SRI. With 25 years of experience conducting research on student learning, assessment, and evaluation of K-12 education programs, she has published more than 45 articles on influences on student learning and on the conditions that promote student achievement, including the relationship of technology use to student achievement.

Dr. Haertel was a task leader on Building a Foundation for a Decade of Rigorous, Systematic Educational Technology Research. This U.S. Department of Education-funded project was designed to provide guidance concerning research designs and assessment approaches that could strengthen the federal learning technology research agenda. Currently, Dr. Haertel is the co-principal investigator, along with Dr. Robert Mislevy, of the Principled Assessment Designs Inquiry Project, which will develop a technology-supported design system to support the development of evidence-centered, principled assessments. Dr. Haertel is currently working on the design and implementation of the Evaluation of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's National School District and Network Grants Program; a program that supports the efforts of organizations and school districts to help create approximately 150 small high schools across the nation. The use of education technology is one of several elements of reform that are being examined. She also co-leads the Online Evaluation Resource Library, a digital library of evaluation resources designed to support professional evaluators in the planning, reporting, and instrument construction of evaluations for NSF-funded projects.

Before coming to SRI, she was a senior research associate and co-principal investigator at Temple University's Center for Research in Human Development and Education.
