Carlin Llorente

Research Social Scientist

Carlin Llorente is an education researcher and evaluator in SRI’s Center for Technology in Learning. His professional interests include informal learning environments (especially those in community and family settings), technology in education, life-span human development, and non-traditional assessment. His work focuses on the issue of how current and emerging technologies may contribute to individual human development by providing new opportunities for learning, teaching, communication, and expression.

Carlin presently co-leads and contributes to a range of research, evaluation, and consulting projects including the summative evaluation of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Ready to Learn initiative and complementary research on home computing supported by AT&T and One Economy through the Access All program.

Prior to joining SRI, he worked for seven years as a project leader and research and development associate at Education Development Center Inc. Within EDC’s Community, Technology and Learning Group, Carlin provided direct consultation to programs in communities across the United States, designed and delivered trainings (online and in person), and conducted research. This work involved contact with fields of practice ranging from afterschool and community technology to youth development and community development. He was Associate Director of the America Connects Consortium, which for five years provided technical assistance (TA) and research services to the U.S. Department of Education’s Community Technology Centers program. He also directed the education-related activities on the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Neighborhood Networks TA project.

Prior to his work at EDC, Carlin worked as an elementary Special Education instructor and as a teacher of reading and writing for college undergraduates. As a volunteer, he has been active in site-based education reform. He holds a self-designed Bachelor of Arts from The Evergreen State College and a Master’s degree in Human Development and Psychology from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
